Wife’s Surprise Turns Painful Due to Husband’s Work Residue

Relationships require a delicate balance of love and care, especially when life throws unexpected challenges. She innocently thought it would spark joy, but instead, it brought tears and pain.

This is my first time ever posting anything like this, as I’m (27F) usually a very, very shy person. My husband (28M) has lost about fifty pounds in the last year, so his uniform shirts are a little bit too big on him, and he always wears them as an overlayer with a t-shirt underneath. Just for a bit of context.

My husband’s been working at a state prison for about three years. They are currently going through a pretty severe staff shortage, and as such, he’s been working a lot of doubles and is very, very tired. We haven’t had as much time together as we usually would.

Well, like any married couple in their mid-20s, we love each other very much and have been severely lacking time together. The day before all of this happened, my husband had worked a sixteen-hour shift and gotten into a couple of restraints. When he got home, he threw the over shirt on my blanket chest, immediately showered, and went to sleep because he had to be back at work in about ten hours.

The next morning, he woke up and was immediately grumpy because he didn’t want to go back in after having spent pretty much the entire week there except for sleeping, so I decided to surprise him with a little adult kiss.

Well, about halfway through, I started to notice that my eye was burning. At first, I thought maybe one of my eyelashes had broken off, and I tried my darndest to ignore it when both of my eyes started to uncontrollably water. Still, I tried to power through it, but I literally could not ignore it when my nose started to burn, and it started to feel like my cheeks were horribly sunburned. My husband, up until this point, was completely oblivious, obviously, and made a comment about the tears running down my cheeks, thinking it was related to the events taking place.

Within about 10 seconds of my cheeks starting to burn, it got to the point of me being unable to ignore it all, and it felt like the pain was starting to get worse. Me being an absolute idiot, grabbed the bottom edge of my husband’s shirt, under the impression it was clean, and wiped my eyes, trying to get the burning sensation to stop.

Three things happened at once: I jerked my head back as the pain seemed to infinitely multiply, and I realized that where I’d been touching his shirt, there was a very light coating of an oily orange residue on my fingers.

Immediately, I’m on the ground, crying, trying to figure out how to stop the searing pain in my eyes. As I’m rubbing it with my hands, it’s getting worse, and my husband was protesting, not realizing what’s going on, followed by immediately realizing what’s going on and starting to laugh at me. He explained that he’s not laughing at my suffering; he’s just been where I am right now, and he pretty much just picks me up, carries me to the bathroom, and starts rinsing my eyes.
